Staff Profile:
Ms. Yetunde Aduke Opadotun has carried out a rigorous study on the representation of masculinity in gender studies using Ifá Verbal Art as a paradigm. This resulted in her master’s thesis titled “Ìtúpalẹ̀ Kókó-Ọ̣̀rọ̀ Ajẹmákọ Nínú Ewì Ifá (A Critical Analysis of Masculinity in Ifa Poetry)”. She was given an Award of Academic Excellence upon completion of her M.A. degree programme, Jimoh Ibrahim Postgraduate Award of Academic Excellence, (Board of Postgraduate College, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, Nigeria) in 2021. She is currently at the final stage of her PhD program. The title of her thesis is “An Examination of Gender Issues in Selected Yoruba Films”. The study concludes that Yorùbá films are important cultural tools for rethinking gender relations in modern Nigeria. They expose harmful practices, challenge silence around trauma, support justice for victims, and promote wealthier forms of masculinity and femininity rooted in cooperation rather than domination. Ultimately, the films encourage society to embrace healing, acceptance, mutual respect, and shared responsibility – values necessary for stronger families and more balanced gender relations. This is her permanent contribution to knowledge in gender studies and contemporary issues in the society.
