Welcome To Our Department

Welcome to the Department of Linguistics and African Languages, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria. We run two different but related programmes at the undergraduate and graduate levels: Linguistics, and Yoruba. Our aim is to train our students in the art of language, culture and the interconnectivity between these and every facet of human existence. We approach our work with the belief that language and culture are central to everything humans do. This is the core of our pride and values. Graduates from our Department have become successful media practitioners, entrepreneurs, administrators, editors, actors, writers, translators, Artificial Intelligence experts, and educators, among many others.

The Department is blessed with seasoned academics and experts in the field who are able to train students on the centrality of language and culture to the changing realities of the human race. In addition, teaching and research in the Department are aided by world-class laboratories, namely phonetics laboratory with a sound-proofed studio, language resource laboratory and a well-equipped culture laboratory.
